as i began thinking about the images in which i wanted to collect, i looked at the words i was using in my thesis at the time and ‘formlessness’ was prevalent. the term attracted both positive and negative attention. Following a few class discussions and some meetings with other classmates, it became apparent i really needed to understand and truly define the ‘formlessness.’
i began with a handful of images in which i thought i could find some sense of formlessness in.

from there i wanted to explore some of the qualities and keywords related to formlessness in hopes of moving forward in my thesis development. i continued to stumble across ‘boundaries,’ which has so far been a constant theme, whether prevalent or subtle.
this collage was a collection of buildings throughout history that i brought together in fragments to depict a scene that is ever changing. as ‘form’ begins to create boundaries with the program, ‘formlessness’ began to stray from strictly a visual idea about an object and became somewhat of a theory relating to the entire city. i see formlessness as a possibility, opportunity, and encouragement for change i wonder about a city where the program of every building is changed each year.Businesses would change their location, people would move to other buildings, every building within the city would be reduced to its essence in order to allow for multiple possibilities and constant reinterpretation. the post modern focus of architecture as an image is replaced with an idea having no preconceptions or boundaries concerning program, experience, or otherwise, as well as allowing for individual interpretation by everyone.

i imagine a group of people who have live in a postmodern world cluttered with meaningless images. the people watch shadows of style after style come and go on the facades hiding the essence of what is in front of a fire behind them, and begin to preconcieve ideas about these shadows. the shadows are as close as the public gets to seeing reality. the architect is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.
THESIS:
meaningless form is that what becomes obstructive and creates preconcieved ideas about the interior, leaving no unassuming experience within a space. architectural expertice is forgotten when one enters a building, however, the realization that architects need to break from their current tendencies and accentuate the essence of architectural experience will rid the boundaries in which form creates.

this idea map was done after my allegory of architecture abstract. working backwards, i tried to break down my allegory in hopes of better explaining and understanding Plato’s idea.

with this idea map, i broke form into two categories…productive and obstructive.
obstructive form becomes an image that forces preconceived ideas about the program and the overall experience of the building. i also found obstructive form to be architecture that was outdated and dysfunctional as well as architecture that is “too hungry for the future.”
productive formis unassuming. form doesn’t limit its program, nor does function dictate the form. the architecture relies on the interpretation of the user.

meaningless form is that what is generic and becomesobstructiveas it creates society’s ideal of the perfect image. erasing this image will allow users to experience theunassuming truth about each space as they move through the building. in breaking this boundary, formlessness is created and the outdated bond between form and function will disappear, leaving both form without function, and function without form.
